International Dot Day at ISNS|ISNS
Phoenix Artists have been getting ready to celebtrate International Dot Day on September 15th.
On this day we celebrate risk-takers who try new things, open-minded learners who try something even if they think they won’t enjoy it, and reflective artists who think of ways they can improve or extend their work.
From K2 all the way to Grade 5, students experimented with drawing and painting circles in individual and collaborative pieces in Creative Arts and Visual Arts classes.
As is our tradition, we also read the story The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds.
In the story, we meet Vashti, who is unsure about her drawing skills. With a little encouragement from her teacher, she starts her artistic journey. Vashti soon shows how she is a reflective learner and starts experimenting with her dots. She becomes an open-minded and risktaker artist—and soon she is inspiring others to “make a mark” too!
We hope this day inspires you to dive into your own art, make mistakes, and try something new, even if you are feeling a bit unsure about your skills.
Stop by & look at the dotted work our Phoenix Artists worked on!
Here are some fabulous artists who inspired us:
■ Yayoi Kusama
■ Alma Thomas
■ Wassily Kandinsky
■ Georges Seurat

How DOT DAY All Started . . .
International Dot Day, a global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration, began when teacher Terry Shay introduced his classroom to Peter H. Reynolds’ book The Dot on September 15, 2009.
The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe.
Each year on International Dot Day – with the help of people just like you – the inspiration continues. What started as a story in the pages of a book is transforming teaching and learning around the world as people of all ages re-discover the power and potential of creativity in all they do.
