One day my friend found me, and he told me "bro I’ve been feeling a little bit strange these days. My hands keep shaking, and I can't even hold a pen sometimes. I am afraid, like my brain was telling me I'm going to die soon, or something bad is going to happen, although nothing is really happening in reality."
I responded "maybe you should go and find a mental health professional?" He went silent for a while and then said "but my parents may not support me, and I don't have enough money…I’ve never seen a mental doctor before and I’m afraid..." He just stopped there and didn't talk anymore.
This snapshot reveals a lot, and I would like to invite everyone to take a closer look at it from both societal and individual perspectives.
Starting with the societal background. One key feature of Chinese society is "meritocracy." Many people believe that the score of the Gaokao exam determines everything - literally everything in your life. (For those unfamiliar, the Gaokao is just like SAT exam, but in China, you basically have only one chance to take it.) If you can't do well on this exam, you're definitely a loser in life - 100%. That may sound exaggerated, but this mindset is so widespread that it creates intense fear among students of messing up the exam. The "exam stress" has become one of the main factors causing students' mental health issues.
Students always have endless papers to do, even when they are exhausted. On top of the academic pressures, there is social pressure forcing them to act "normal" even when they are silently struggling with depression, anxiety, or sadness. Many students remain silent, because they have the fear of opening up to others. They worry that if they vent it out, it means acknowledging that they are being "abnormal."
According to the research published in the Lancet, the percentage of mental disorders among children and adolescents in China has reached 8.9%, which means around 30.8 young people are affected. Even more concerning, this number is still increasing. It’s really impressive data, right? Ok so now we'll move to the next topic: let's talk about society in this context.
The first point that I want to mention is the effect of the "digital era". According to several research findings, there's a significant positive relationship between the overload of information and people's pressure, depression, and anxiety. When individuals are exposed to information that is more than absorption limit, the remaining information will accumulated and cause pressure and finally leads to anxiety.
The second point is based on a theory called "Social Comparison Theory." It states that individuals have the inner driving force to judge themselves by comparing themselves with others. There is so much modified information on social media. For example, things seem as if everyone is in the best university or everybody has a high quality of life. So, users may compare themselves with these "fancy lifestyles," which lead to self-doubt and finally enhance the sense of anxiety.
Lack of access, means that although there is high demand for mental health service. The available resources are far from enough; the total amount of supply is limited. Research shows that there are over 90% of patients who did not get appropriate treatment, or even received no treatment at all.
Lack of regulation is a little bit complicated. There are few laws or industry standards to guide and supervise the market, so the cost of the service is so far beyond what people can afford. The whole industry lacks an authoritative organization, so everybody has their own saying, which brings the industry into a kind of chaos. Some people have even become “counsellors” simply by paying to obtain a certificate—without proper training; that’s deeply concerning.
However, with the rapid improve of the domestic economic condition, people will begin to have more awareness of themselves. More and more emotional needs will become visible. Meanwhile, the Internet is currently moving into web 3.0, which is a user-based digital world. With the improvement of technology, tools like "chatbot" will be more widely used. We will have more chances to break away from the traditional identity by using series of methods to re-construct our identity with stronger resilience. Remember that when you change yourself a little bit, you're also contributing to the change of the whole society, even the whole world.
