斐特思小学丨请认真守护每一个孩子的阅读热情
中国的青少年只有10%的孩子每年能达到30本书籍的阅读量,成年人年均阅读量仅不到5本书。当阅读遇到标准化课程挤压,孩子们的想象空间不断被压缩,被定义为“闲书”的书籍们不再允许被孩子们触碰。校园图书馆正在成为「守护阅读热情」的最后堡垒。
Only 10% of Chinese teenagers are able to read 30 books a year, while the average number of books read by adults is fewer than five. As standardized courses take up more of students' time, opportunities for reading are significantly reduced, and children's imagination and creativity are increasingly stifled. Books categorized as "leisure reading" are often discouraged or even prohibited for children. In this context, school libraries have become the last stronghold for preserving and fostering a love of reading.
阅读是一种习惯,就像人们需要社交。阅读也是一种技能,需要花时间进行培养。在斐特思学校我们愿花时间培养每一个孩子的阅读习惯和阅读技能。更重要的是,我们用心守护每一个孩子与生俱来的阅读热情。
Reading is an essential habit, similar to the way people need social interaction, and it is also a skill that takes time to develop. At FCG, we are committed to dedicating the time and effort needed to nurture each child's reading habits and skills. More importantly, we wholeheartedly cherish and protect each child's natural passion for reading.
在斐特思图书馆,我们让每个孩子都能遇见与自己「灵魂共振」的好书。斐特思学校图书馆深度融合英式阅读培养及IB全人教育理念,2座图书馆分布在校园中心,构建多元学习社区。全馆超3万册藏书涵盖文学、科学、艺术等领域,支持双语阅读与跨学科探究,助力学生构建全球视野。
At FCG, we strive to ensure that every child discovers books that inspire and resonate with them. Our library combines the best of British reading traditions with the IB philosophy of holistic education. At the heart of our campus, we’ve created a rich learning community with two libraries. Together, they hold over 30,000 books spanning literature, science, art, and more. The libraries support bilingual reading, encourage interdisciplinary exploration, and help students develop a global perspective.
在一年一度的“罗尔德·达尔日”的校园活动中,激发孩子们非凡的创造力与同理心。图书馆摇身一变孩子们探险的“巧克力工厂”,孩子化身威利旺卡的化学员,甚至动手操作《乔治的神奇药水》的配方场景。这种联动的阅读体验,正是IB教育中“知识建构者”能力的最佳注解。
The annual 'Roald Dahl Day' campus event ignites children's creativity and empathy. The primary library transforms into a 'Chocolate Factory' for children's adventures, and students become Willy Wonka's apprentices. They even get hands-on with the scenes of concocting the magical potion from "George's Marvellous Medicine. "This interactive reading experience is the best illustration of the 'Knowledge Constructor' ability in IB education.
图书馆内资源是根据年龄的适宜性进行系统化管理。图书馆收藏了各式各样的儿童文学,以及相关的中英文印刷资源。除了实体书籍与馆藏外,图书馆还提供数据库和在线资源,支持教师教学与学生的自主学习。
The library’s resources are carefully organized to suit different age groups. It features a wide range of children’s literature and related materials in both Chinese and English. Along with physical books and collections, the library also provides access to databases and online resources to support teachers in their teaching and students in their self-study.
Global Vision:
Cultivating World Citizens from 30,000 Books
The books in the library have been carefully selected, covering classic literature, scientific works and internationally award-winning picture books, balancing humanistic care and scientific enlightenment. The library serves as a vibrant learning hub, with its true value rooted in meeting students’ needs. Library teacher Ms. Cathy has thoughtfully designed a series of engaging book recommendation activities. These activities encourage students to suggest books they love to their peers, creating a chain reaction of shared reading enthusiasm. Through this process, students transition from being passive users of resources to active contributors and sharers of knowledge. These recommendations usually quickly create a reading craze among students. When G4 student Grace recommended "The Magic Crêperie", it soon won the favour of G3 student Vivi, becoming her favourite book. The connection and friendship between students of different ages has also quietly begun.
English Graded Reading:
Cultivating Core Literacy in English Reading
例如,初学者从BR200级别(幼儿园前)的《Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?》起步,逐步过渡到初中阶段的《The Giver》等经典文学作品,实现语言能力的阶梯式提升。
In globalised education, English reading ability has become an important indicator for measuring students' core literacy. As a scientific and systematic reading approach, graded reading matches students' language proficiency and cognitive development patterns, providing an effective path for cultivating lifelong reading skills. The myON English Graded Reading System, with its intelligent grading system and vast resource library, is becoming a benchmark tool in this field. Graded reading uses quantitative assessment methods (such as the Lexile score) to accurately identify students' reading levels, avoiding the "one-size-fits-all" drawback of traditional teaching. Based on big data, the myON system's intelligent recommendation algorithm can generate personalised reading lists for each student. For instance, beginners start with BR200 level books (pre-kindergarten) like "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" and gradually progress to classic literary works such as "The Giver" in middle school, achieving a step-by-step improvement in language proficiency.
Tips for Parents:
Three Steps to Find Your Child's "Golden Books"
英文不是强项的家长可以通过Five fingers(五根手指)试读原则帮助孩子判断英文图书的难度。孩子在阅读英文图书过程中,如果某一页中有超过5个单词不认识,那就说明这本图书对孩子来说有点不适应了。通过这个简单小游戏,家长们也能轻松帮孩子找到"跳一跳够得着"的适读书籍!
Parents who know nothing about English can help their children judge the difficulty of English books through the "Five Fingers" trial reading principle. When a child is reading an English book, if they encounter more than five unfamiliar words on a single page, it suggests that the book might be too challenging for them and could hinder their reading comfort and comprehension. . Through this simple little game, parents with no English background can also easily help their children find suitable books they can access with a little effort!
The Magic of Chinese Reading:
The Leap from "Vocabulary" to "Reading Ability"
The library adopts a colour-coded classification display system (with colours indicating difficulty levels) to arrange picture books and reading materials according to age and reading ability. At the same time, it provides personalised recommendations to help students quickly locate books suitable for them. Before borrowing books, Ms Cathy and other teachers will provide recommendations based on the student's interests, vocabulary, and reading ability. The all-English immersive reading course is led by native educators, with vocabulary expansion and in-depth reading accelerating language acquisition and helping students practice in specific scenarios. The tiered reading system is dynamically adjusted to ensure each student can progress appropriately. The transformation from "word recognition" to "reading ability" is hidden in every reading material.
Accompanying Reading:
Reading Mentoring System
At FCG Library, our reading services are not limited by age labels but are tailored to accurately reflect each student’s individual abilities. For example, a Grade 1 student might have a reading list that matches the level of a Grade 3 student. Librarians would recommend that students read aloud books they are interested in, analyse their fluency and comprehension, and suggest "bridge books" to reduce their anxiety based on the reports while providing audio resources to assist with understanding simultaneously. When students enter the independent reading stage, teachers will recommend reading lists based on text difficulty and interest themes, carefully selecting works that can enhance logical analysis skills and cultivate the habit of deep reading.
阅读,绝非孤立之事,它是个人精神成长的基石。在教育的宏大版图中,请为阅读留出空间,守护我们每一个孩子的阅读热情。
Reading is the foundation of an individual’s intellectual and spiritual growth. In the vast journey of education, let us create space for reading and nurture every child’s passion for it.
