G8 DEEP DIVE

G8 DEEP DIVE

G8 DEEP DIVE

G8 DEEP DIVE

G8 DEEP DIVE

Why is the paper of The Young thicker than that of Lifeweek? Is it a special treatment for teenagers?
How much does a teacher who has worked at Hanfenlou (The Commercial Press) for 20 years earn?
Why does big data never recommend content from Lifeweek to us?
How can physical bookstores survive in the era of e-commerce?
How do paid podcasts actually make money? And how do free ones survive?
Are these old books genuine or reprinted versions?
If I use AI to create podcasts, can I make
money too?
Hidden in such a hard-to-find place, how do you attract people to come and buy books?

When the children eagerly raised these questions, we knew we had come to the right place.
After all, the questions on our task list before setting out were quite different:
What does your ideal library look like?
What kind of books do you think the Hede Library needs to add the most?
What do you imagine happens daily in an editorial office?
How do you envision the creation of a podcast episode?
What kind of interesting merchandise would you like to buy at the Hede Library?

Sounds boring, doesn’t it? Regardless, five questions, five expectations, five task sheets—each carrying thoughts and curiosity as we set off.
This time, the children’s destinations were vibrant creative spaces: book editorial offices, podcast studios, and representative bookstores—both ideal and real.

In the new school year, both new and returning students at Hurd's middle school level will encounter this enhanced curriculum: the Deep Dive course, which we affectionately call DD.
DD is not an extension of traditional teaching, nor is it simply a PBL (Project-Based Learning) program. It is a "deep dive." It does not encourage "advanced learning" or seek "quick answers." Instead, it aims to broaden students’ perspectives and deepen their understanding through cross-disciplinary knowledge connections. Here, students engage in on-site research, participate in industry collaborations, and drive community projects—all based on the rules of the real world.

The DD course for eighth grade is a required component of the curriculum, scheduled for four full-day sessions every Wednesday. The traditional 40-minute classes have been extended into 75-minute deep-dive modules, focusing on four key areas: English, STEAM, scientific research, and leadership & service.
The program employs the EMADN evaluation system to support personalized growth and deep learning among eighth-grade students, while also helping them develop self-awareness and foster a positive mindset toward learning.
Why did we undertake such an extensive upgrade?
Let us return to the first off-campus activity for eighth graders.
This outing was part of one of the four major modules of DD: "Leadership & Service."

Focused on the theme of "Library and Media Exploration," this module aims to guide students in understanding the production, dissemination, and value of knowledge through on-site visits, industry dialogues, and project-based practice—ultimately giving back to the school community.
Based on this goal, students were divided into five project groups , each embarking on a unique mission to a different destination.
Library - Space Renovation

G8 DEEP DIVE
The Space Renovation Group visited the birthplace of modern Chinese publishing—The Commercial Press Hanfenlou. This location is not only one of Beijing’s most historically and culturally significant bookstores but also an important landmark for cultural exchange between China and the West.

With a century-old history, Hanfenlou offers an exceptional model through its unique architectural layout, humanistic spatial design, and innovative "integration of library and bookstore" operational model. Immersed in its profound cultural atmosphere, the students experienced firsthand how lighting, spatial flow, and functional zoning can create a multifunctional space integrating reading, learning, and cultural exchange.

Here, they sought not only inspiration for spatial transformation but also ways to foster a dialogue between books and people.
Library -Book Curation

G8 DEEP DIVE
Amid the towering bookshelves of Lifeweek Taofen Bookstore, often hailed as the "spiritual home of intellectuals," the Book Curation Group was captivated.

As a benchmark for academic and cultural bookstores in China, Lifeweek is renowned for its rigorous book selection standards, professional categorization, and commitment to promoting high-quality publications. From classic works to the latest releases, academic treatises to popular reads, every book reflects the careful consideration of its curators.

With notebooks in hand, the students diligently studied the logic behind the bookstore’s classification system, contemplating how to select the most valuable reads for their schoolmates.
Media Center - Print Publication

G8 DEEP DIVE
The Print Publication Group stepped into the Lifeweek Young Editors' Office with a sense of pilgrimage. For the first time, the place they had only seen on magazine copyright pages came to life before their eyes.

They learned about the entire process from topic planning to printing, engaged in face-to-face conversations with editors, and gained insights into the reasoning behind every detail on each page.

For students aspiring to build their own editorial team, this experience not only demystified content production but also showcased the responsibility and standards that professional media should uphold.
Media Center - Audiovisual Production

G8 DEEP DIVE
The Audiovisual Production Group visited SoundDynamic Studio, a leading institution in the Chinese podcasting industry.

As an industry benchmark, the studio has not only produced several influential hit programs but also established a comprehensive system covering content planning, recording, editing, brand collaboration, and commercial operations.

In this "dream factory of sound," the students saw professional recording booths and mixing equipment, listened to producers share how an idea evolves into a polished program, and gained a clear understanding of the end-to-end production chain and industry standards.
Media Center - Merchandise Development

G8 DEEP DIVE
The Merchandise Development Group visited Yishan Books by Xuxu Huasheng, a bookstore dedicated to lifestyle aesthetics and children’s content. Known for its forward-looking book curation, creatively crafted cultural products, and curated retail model, the store has garnered widespread acclaim.

By deeply integrating content dissemination with physical experience, it has successfully built a highly distinctive brand merchandise system.

For students pondering what "interesting merchandise" their school library might lack, observing everything from book-derived products to independently designed items provided not only cutting-edge insights into cultural product development but also inspiration on how to convey cultural values and strengthen user connections through merchandise.
Immerse yourself in the moment, and the children’s questions begin to burst forth:
Why is the paper used in ‘The Young’ thicker than that of ‘Lifeweek’? Is it a form of preferential treatment for teenagers?
Teacher, you’ve worked at Hanfenlou for 20 years—how much do you earn?
Why does big data never recommend ‘Lifeweek’s content to us?
How can physical bookstores survive in the age of e-commerce?
How do paid podcasts actually make money? And how do free ones manage to survive?
Are these old books genuine originals or reprints?
If I use AI to create podcasts, can I make money too?
Hidden in such an out-of-the-way location—how do you attract people to come here and buy books?
Perhaps this is the very purpose of our journey. The first step of the DD course was never just about finding answers—it was about exposing the children to reality and encouraging them to attempt responses. More importantly, it was about igniting their curiosity about how the world operates and, ultimately, empowering them to become active participants in shaping it.

We observed Nono jotting down notes about a “user perspective” as the founder of Yishan explained the design philosophy behind the One-Meter Library. We noticed Joe at Lifeweek Taofen Bookstore, gazing at the walls of books and whispering in admiration, “There are so many themes from around the world here, and so many specialized academic works—I love it.” Then he added earnestly, “After careful selection, our school library should introduce more of these kinds of professional books.”

When discussing topic ideas for the Hurd School Magazine with Chen Sai, editor-in-chief of ‘Lifeweek Young’, Bernice and Tiantian enthusiastically proposed a “new student guide.” Meanwhile, Shenghua, an actual new student, quietly sat down next to Teacher Sun Yi, eagerly asking about the steps involved in creating a magazine.
Ten weeks from now, these five project groups will complete their first rotation. By the end of the semester, how many student-driven transformation projects will emerge in Hurd’s Library and Media Center? A year from now, how will these children reshape Hurd? And years later, what will Hurd ultimately become…

Rather than anticipating a new look for the campus, we are truly witnessing real growth happening right before our eyes. It unfolds closer to us than we might expect—in ways familiar and unexpected, admirable and astonishing… This is growth in its most authentic form.
The moment we committed to this journey, even just after the first session, we were already looking forward to the DD Fair—where students will showcase their projects and speak about their work with confidence on this unique platform.
This is the truest meaning behind every journey we undertake.
